We had our name drawn for next week on the upsalquitch and was just wondering if anyone has been there this year? Good fishing yet? What is the fly of choice on this river? Never Been there so any info on it would be great. Thanks

My Father just came back from the Fork's streach on the Upsalquitch yesterday (Fished the 20,21,22nd). They hooked one fish between the two them but lost it after about 5 min. He said there weren't many fish around yet. He said floating over the big holding pools (Bib Bogan, Forks Pool) that they only saw one or two fish in each. If there are fish around thoes pools typically have lots of fish in them.

I didn't ask what fly they hooked the fish on.

The Upsalquitch can be tough, but I've heard great things about it. I've only been there twice myself once in Aug of 2003 when I didn't know any better and there were exactly zero fish at the nine mile pool (NW Upsalquitch stretch) A few years later I got it for just about this time, late June as I'd heard that it was good then. There were a few fish around saw the odd grilse and one salmon, but no numbers in the nine mile pool like you'd expect. Ofcourse the ten mile barrier pool had lots of fish in it. My advice is to bring lots of beer and steaks because if there's no amount of fish at the forks and crooked rapids (two best stretches according to one local Juniper legend) then I wouldn't be overly hopeful for the NW stretch. Having said that you could wake up on any morning and find that fresh fish have arrived during the over night hours. One other thing you could do is canoe the si Km stretch and check the six mile pool and all the other ones along the way and get picked up at that bridge that seperates the NW stretch from Cravens Gulch stretch.

Good Luck

Well that doesn't sound to promising. The beer and steaks will be in ample supply although the weather is not looking promising either. If need be we'll have to move on to refreshments with a little more octane and neither the weather nor the fishing will really matter! We'll give it a shot and hope for the best, it's all about getting away from it all for a few days anyway.

Well we made it back last night after a very good trip. Landed 4 big grisle and hooked and lost 1 salmon, and 2 trout. The weather was less then favorable, rain the entire time we were there. The river was low so we didn't make it to the anything below the 6 mile pool. We had the best luck at the 8 and 9 mile pool. All fish were hooked on a green machine or belly dancer. When we arrived the guy at the barrier said that there was over 100 salmon up through and it was plain to see because the 10 mile pool was full of fish, stacked like firewood. We saw a lot of fish in all the pools but the 7 mile. I was watching a salmon as long as my leg for a friend that was above me trying to put his fly right beside it's face when it exploded up off the bottom coming for his fly with it's mouth open and it got about 2 inches from it and changed it's mind. Was very impressive to see. Anyone going to the NW stretch should have a lot of action, we had a great time.

Thanks JM. I am heading up to Craven's Gulch the middle of the month. Just hope there is water for the canoe.

"Good luck Ghost, let me know how the group made out when you return. BTW, what is the scoop with the photo you posted of the Upsalquitch, is that last year? " - DT

I've been on every Crown Reserve stretch on the Upsalquitch with my kids , beautiful river . That photo and the one put up today were both taken on the CG stretch 2 or 3 years ago .

Sorry we missed you at Flyin' eddy, We were running late as usual. Caught nothing on Tuesday(water was muddy). Caught 5 grilse on Wednesday, thunder storms hit at supper and muddied the water again, caught nothing that night, and when we got up the next morning the water had rose at least 3 feet. We packed up and left for the south renous. A great trip non the less!
