Stripped bass with mackerel

DFO announces closures of Atlantic mackerel, bait fisheries to restore stocks | Globalnews.ca

This article makes me a little worried... at the beginning of August, I'll be on vacation for three weeks in the Miscou Island area and I wonder if I'll be able to get mackerel for bait from the fish stores. Having fished only with that for years, I wonder what I could use as a replacement to fish from the shore, with a dead line. I thought of smelts (frozen from the grocery store...), pork liver... any suggestions?

I have smelt stocked up from the ice season that I plan to use for sturgeon and eel. I’m sure shad and gaspereaux would work since bass eat them in the wild.
Gaspereaux works. I was thinking salt curing some pork liver and trying that myself.

Thank you for your comments.

I read somewhere that pork rinds would be working and they hold up well on the hook. I will definitely try it if mackerel is lacking. I checked here at the supermarket and a 1kg frozen mackerel sells for about 8 dollars...as for smelt, not being "fat" enough, striped bass would not be attracted but I will probably try it. Anyway, if it doesn't work, I'll eat them!
