The tourney is just 3 weeks away! If you don't want to spend the night (24th) you don't have to, but you do need to be a the captain's meeting that evening at the Hammond River Angling Association lodge. Also, measuring devices will not be provided. Though they are not required for this tourney, in the event of a tie total fish lenght will determine the winner(s), so you might want to pick one up at crappy tire or what not. (i.e.- the stick on measuring tape type)

Hey Stroover! Is the Captain's meeting mandatory? I have a wedding reception (not mine, but I still need to be there) at that same time in St. Andrews, so I have zero chance of making it. I was panning on pre-registering, then check in at 6am Sunday for the registration.

No worries if it is mandatory, I just need to know.

BTW, I heard on the radio the other day that the Hammond is really really low this year. Is that still the case? Any chance that will threaten the tournament?

BobD
Good question, Bob!

If you can't make it to the meeting the night before, you can still participate in the tourney. The meeting is just for going over the rules and making any changes collectively so everybody knows what's going on. It's also a chance to meet everyone and to get the cameraderie going. Good party, too!

The Hammond is low in the upper stretches, but the lower stretch where the tourney takes place shouldn't be affected with the tidal flow.

Don't forget, kids fish for free in the tourney if accompanied by an adult!
The tourney is this weekend guys! (July 24-25)
CBC Radio One 91.3 FM interviewed me this morning, and it ran a few times today and should run again tonight. I picked up the last of the sponsored prizes, and we're good to go!
We made it so that if people cannot make it to the Saturday's events (camp set-up, registration, social, captain's meeting) they can simply show up Sunday and fish. Folks can even fish off the banks (Not what I was intending, but the executive director of the Hammond River Angling Association made the announcement in the newsletter, so we'll roll with it).

Please make every effort to come!!! It's gonna be a BLAST!!!
Well, our first annual Hammond River Kayak Fishing Tournament was a success! Thank you to all who participated this weekend and to all who volunteered and helped out. Congratulations to Richard Little who won the kayak with a total 40.25" of 4 individual species of fish (yellow perch, smallie, pickerel, and sunfish), second place to Nathan Robinson who won the fish finder with a total of 37" of the same fish. Third place went to our very own ipop with a total of 32 1/4" of fish consisting of a yellow perch, a nice 13" smallmouth bass, and a sunfish.

Despite giving the lads a 4-hour lead and finishing one hour early, I managed to finish 8th place out of a total of 19 anglers.

Despite the bad weather, we had a pretty good turn-out for our first year's event. Everybody walked away with a prize, plus a 2 year's subscription to the digital version Kayak Angler Magazine, so therefore everybody walked away with their money's worth and more.

I know the bad weather was likely a factor in keeping many of you away, but a big thanks goes out to the die-hards that showed-up and helped to make this event a success! I hope to see the rest of you there NEXT year!!!

I was one of the people lucky enough to get to the tournament and I am very happy that I did. I had a great time and had a lot of fun.

Stroover, you and the Hammond River Angling Association did an amazing job as hosts and organizers. Kudos to you all. The prizes you managed to get together were terrific! I was very impressed! I managed to come home with a kayaking pfd (http://www.extrasport.com/product/pfds/canoe_kayak/eagle.aspx) courtesy of Eco-Logical Adventures (http://www.ecologicaladventures.ca/) of Oromocto. How awesome is that?

I was surprised by the amount of smallmouth bass in the river. They may have been small, but they were everywhere. It's the first time I've ever seen bass outnumber perch! I'm sure the freakishly warm summer we have had played a factor in the warm water and lack of activity with the larger bass, but that river must have some tremendous bass action when they are spawning. I'll definitely make a trip down to check it out!

Finally I have to say that I was impressed by facilities. You guys at the HRAA have a terrific building and area, on a beautiful river. I wish I had been able to arrive in time to sit back and relax on your deck and look out over the river. I look forward to coming back next year so I can do just that (oh, and maybe compete in the tournament as well)!

Great job, and I look forward to many years of attending your tournament.

Well said BOB...what else is there to say. Everything was great from the event, to the facilities, competitors and the orginizers. I wont even complain about the weather.

I am looking forward to putting that new fish finder/gps to work once I get my new SOT!!!
We should get together some time. I`d like to check out that fishfinder once you have it all rigged up! Maybe we could go target some sturgeon or stripers some time.

I don`t think I`m that guy. I`m not great with names, but I never connected anyone with `rocketball` until you mentioned the fishfinder. IPOP I remember, but then he is quite distinctive. BTW I have the sand coloured Ocean Kayak trident 13.

And say the word on the sturgeon outing. I`m in!
