Hey, I was just wondering if anyone on here has been out fishing on the petty or little river. If you have did you have any luck? what did you catch? what should you use?
I was out on the little last weekend... caught a couple of small brookies. They were grabbing up light cahills and mosquitos then. I'm heading out again this weekend so we'll see if they're still snacking on the same bugs.

Which part of the river were you fishing? I live down by the bridge on the Coverdale road. I recently started was taught to fly fish by my dad (Hint: I'm just a teenager who enjoys fishing) I haven't been out on the water yet with a fly rod and don't have much for flies but i have a rod and a reel and a couple streamers. It doesn't seem like there was many trout around this season but i guess you'd beg to differ? I tried many times with worms but ended up with nothing so I figured what better time to learn to fly fish.

Welcome to your new addiction of fly fishing, Hairhead! This is my first year of fly fishing & totally love it.

Fished the Petty a couple of weeks ago in the evening. Made my first fly fishing mistake.....I only took my spinning rod..left the fly rod at home.
There were some good size trout rolling on the water. But could not get anything to take bait. Had fun watching how active the fish were on the water, but was quite disappointed with myself that I didn't bring the right gear. lol

Apparently, there have been some half decent size smallies coming out of the Petty, as well. Although, I wasn't fortunate enough to catch any! lol

The fly that I've had the best luck with so far in the areas I mostly fish, is the muddler minnow.

Are you from Salisbury, Hairhead? I grew up in the Salisbury area.

Yes, i live in the Salisbury area, I'm only a few houses down on the Upper Coverdale road from the little river bridge. I'm thinking I might go out and try fly fishing in the river for the first time today, not sure though. What parts of the rivers do you guys fish?

hey peeps, i was wondering if anyone could explain where the little river is!??! i went up the other trying to find it with no luck.. and I DID have my fly rod with me
drunktoad, it all depends where in the river you want to fish. The easiest way to explain it is, the two bridges leaving Salisbury going towards Riverview, the little river is the second one from Salisbury.

Not sure, kinda why I started this thread, I haven't had any luck with worms so i'm hoping throwing some flies out will bring me in some fish.
Well i got into the river for the first time with a fly road and I had some fun, didn't catch anything but, I was talking to another guy on the river that had caught a couple of trout a little bit earlier and had caught some bass in the little river sometime ago. I think I need to get me some quality flies that aren't going to set me back a whole lot, any suggestions on types, brands and stores are very much appreciated.

Is this the area by the concrete bridge after leaving Salisbury heading back to Riverview on that side. I tried for bass there last year with no luck but wonder if the draining of the headpond has now forced some trout and bass back up even that far again? As well, how is the fishing by that park in Salisbury next to the river? What are they catching now this time of the year?

Thanks,
Robert

You mean highland park? Well a guy my dad works with caught a bass when he was out fly fishing down there a couple of weeks ago. I was thinking of going down there and giving it a try. Today though I might go fish where the little river and petty connect.

We were fishing the Petty near the bridge (just up around the bend from the bridge)...so quite close to your place! lol
