Haven't talked to all smelt fishers, but for many that I have asked, I'm hearing lots of people aren't getting the numbers they would have in previous years. Are the big runs truly a thing of the past, or is this just an off year?

I've only been smelt fishing for 4 or 5 years, and it's always been very good this time of year. I think it's either an off-year as you put it, the run happened early this year, or the run just hasn't started yet.

Yeah, it's not every day one pulls out a shark from an ice fishing hole. Lol!

Only one hake. It was about twelve inches, so I guess a small one. I don't know, I had never seen one before and it was the first one I ever caught.

We were using smelt, shrimp, sand worms, prawns, clams, Berkley Powerbait, and Sweedish Pimples. I caught the hake on a shrimp, and Homebrew caught the shark on a whole smelt.

My daughter and I just got back from the shack at Cameron. She got a tommy cod and I got a smelt. I noticed Phillipo Schicolone moved his shack further out. If mine wasn't such a bother, I'd do the same.

I'm thinking the best part of the run was during that warm spell when no one could get out on the ice.   Thats a shame.

I got my shack tonight, its all set up and ready to go. Do we need to register it with somebody? I noticed all the shacks have numbers on them

DFO or DNR wants you to have your name and phone number on your shack. You don't need to register it. If you put it at Renforth, it'll cost you something like $30 to have it out there. You "register" it at that particular shack with the little deck in front.

Don't leave anything valuable in it especially if you're putting your name on it.

What do you get for your $30 beyond free entry into their smelt tourney? Is that money for keeping the road open or ice plowed or something?

It keeps the "road" plowed and covers your entry fee for the derby.

I fished yesterday morning parked beside phillipo , it was brutal again , tried a couple open homes as well around the area and notta.
